Computing Awareness Event

16th October 2019 - 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Computer awareness event in plymouth

On the 16th of October, the current intake of the University of Plymouth students will be visiting Plymouth Science Park. They are coming to hear what their chosen industry can offer and to discover the innovative and exciting work being done in their locality.

The conference day has been organized to address two concerns. One that students rarely know exactly what opportunities are available to them on completing a computing degree. The second is that students rarely know what opportunities are local to their University. We often lose them when they look East for jobs.

We are looking for local businesses to work with us to help educate the students in what is happening right here, right now in Plymouth along with emphasising to them what attributes and qualities it takes to be successful in the field.

The last two years, University of Plymouth Computing students have attended the Pool Innovation Centre and, thanks to the hard work of Tony Edwards and colleagues, learnt a great deal about Software Cornwall.

These two visits had some notable successes:

  • summer work experience,
  • placements within Software Cornwall,
  • a start-up, and
  • the establishment of the University of Plymouth CompSoc – the Computing Society

When 57% of students are expected to stay in the region following graduation, this is a great chance to meet potential future job applicants as well as channeling their enthusiasm for the types of skills you are looking for. Highlighting both your company and the tech industry on the doorstep locally, we are hoping to increase this figure in future years.

There are three ways to get involved and help support the development of talent locally:

  • Open your doors to small groups of students for a tour. 10 minutes per group and we can limit the number of groups visiting
  • Give a 10 minute lightening talk on something you are passionate about, company achievements or a pathway into your career.
  • Give a ¾ hour workshop on to inspire new students in learning relevant skills for your company.

About our courses:
Computing is the most flexible of the computer science courses at the University. It is designed to grow technical skills in programming and web development whilst also developing the skill set needed to be an adaptable computing professional. The course has a clear emphasis on employability and benefits from the close links with industry. In addition the Computing, there is the more academic and AI focused degree of Computer Science.

Students who finish either of these degrees often find jobs in the following areas:

  • Software, games, embedded and web development
  • Systems and business analysis
  • Testers and quality assurance
  • Database administrators
  • Digital Marketing

Please contact Dr. Shirley Atkinson,(Associate Head of Computing) at the Plymouth University if you would like to get involved – [email protected]
